Management of natural resources including forest resources must pay attention to the sustainability aspects and the impact of resource use. Natural resources are assets that are used to improve community welfare and development. Management of forests and forest products is required to continue to carry out forest functions from economic, ecological and social aspects. In this case, the role of science and technology becomes a necessity and continues to be supported by various innovations in order to efficiently manage resources.

Forest products as a renewable resource can contribute to providing solutions to one of the problems of the increasingly limited fossil energy through the development of bioenergy. As is known, along with the development of population and technology, energy needs are increasing and fossil energy is becoming increasingly limited. This encourages the development of bioenergy as one of the alternatives to meet energy needs. The importance of bioenergy development has been realized by countries in the world who have agreed to increase low-carbon bioeconomic, and contribute to the development of sustainable bioenergy to meet energy needs.

On the other hand, forest management leaves both waste in processing forest products, harvesting forest products, and in managing the environment in general. With the application of technology, the utilization of waste can be increased into a variety of products that have high added value, both wood products, bioenergy, industrial supporting materials and other strategic products. It is also capable of contributing to increased revenue, encouraging circular economy and increasing the efficiency of resource utilization directed at zero waste. Circular economy basically uses back waste into products that have the potential to be developed and provide economic and environmental benefits.

In this regard, the Forest Products Research and Development Centre organizes an international forum for parties to share information, experience, and contribute ideas in the field of bioenergy and waste utilization to support circular economy and sustainable environmental management.


1. Bioenergy Processing for Sustainable Environmental Management

Increased energy needs are faced by many countries in the world. Bioenergy development is an effort to save diminishing fossil energy, while energy needs continue to increase. This is also in line with awareness of the development of environmentally friendly energy. This theme includes increasing added value from the utilization of timber industry waste, developing bioenergy from biomass including waste, forest plants and other bioenergy sources; equipment engineering, model development, economic studies, and others.

2. Waste Utilization and Management to Support Circular Economy

Waste utilization is an effort to increase added value that can increase income and as an alternative source of income that can strengthen community participation and  employment opportunities. This is in line with the concept of circular economy through careful use of natural resources in an environmentally friendly process so as to obtain efficient use of resources. The application of science and technology and  innovation appropriately are expected to be able to increase product value added. This theme includes the utilization of timber and harvesting industrial waste, solid and liquid waste management, utilization of waste processing results for biomedicine and improvement in the quality of forest products, and other related fields.


International Conference on Forest Product 2019: Adopting the Renewable Bioenergy and Waste Utilization to Support Circular Economy and Sustainable Environment will receive papers that will be presented both oral and poster, including the following aspects:

International Conference on Innovative Solution for Managing Tropical Forest and Conserving Biodiversity to Support SDGs

The world is faced with an unprecedented reduction of biodiversity that is occurring in virtually every ecosystem in the world. Concerns about the loss of species globally are well established but only recently have local jurisdictions begun to develop a comprehensive approach to documenting conditions and threats relating to biodiversity. Forest ecosystems, which can be defined by the presence of tree canopies that cover more than 10% of a site, have not escaped the loss of biodiversity. Science and innovation play a very important role in the management of tropical forest and biodiversity conservation.

Approaches to the management of tropical forest and biodiversity conservation based on the notion that nature provides for all beings have become increasingly popular in recent years, and notably so since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Forest management must change to provide strong support to conservation, valuation and management of biodiversity, combating climate change and contributing to the SDGs, so that all action are easy to communicate and universally applicable to all countries.

Some of the challenges faced in forestry development are strengthening community capacity, enhancing welfare, increasing food security, and halting forest and biodiversity losses. Research, Development and Innovation that focus on managing tropical forests and biodiversity conservation of different types of ecosystems is very important. In these works, there are a lot of research topics that can be done through research activities on agroforestry, paludiculture and agro-silvofishery on such an ecosystems change, biodiversity in forests and landscapes, climate change and ecosystem functions, forest biodiversity monitoring at different spatial scale, and determining valuation of biodiversity and how future biodiversity research will be done. The conference is held discuss the lates reseach, development and innovating works focusing on a range of those issues.

“Translating Science into Climate Policy and Actions”

The paradigm of Sustainable Development (Agenda 21) has been set globally since 1992 and currently become the foundation for national development in Indonesia.  The concept of sustainable development was described by the 1987 Bruntland Commission Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This means the paradigm lies on the three dimensions – society, environment and economy aspects.

In the context of environmental and natural resources management in Indonesia, the stakeholder’s awareness on the sustainable development has evolved. The society has high demand on the sustainability and more advanced management of natural resources than just a conventional issue of the environment. From the government side, sustainable development paradigm is translated into green development policies arranging green investments in the form of eco-friendly businesses in encouraging economic growth and socio-economic benefits.

Despite its raising awareness of the sustainability issues, Indonesia -that has been blessed with the abundance of natural resources- is still facing problems on maintaining its sustainability.  Forest degradation, deforestation and waste problems should be addressed comprehensively. In relation to this, scientific-based approaches that resulted from research, development and innovation activities are important to guide addressing the problems.

Forestry and Environment Research Development and Innovation Agency (FOERDIA) is one of the research agencies in Indonesia dealing with research and development in forestry and environment sectors. As an effort to increase the research impact on the global society and to identify state-of-the-art of the research in the forestry and environment field, research dissemination activity is becoming prominent. Based on this consideration, since 2011, FOERDIA has committed to host the International Conference of Indonesia Forestry Researchers (INAFOR) to disseminate the results of forestry and environment research, development and innovation in Indonesia. The 1st INAFOR was held in December 2011 and 2nd INAFOR was conducted in August 2013. The 3rd INAFOR was conducted in October 2015 as part of Indonesian forestry researchers’ involvement at the International Union Forestry Research Organization (IUFRO), where the 4th INAFOR was successfully conducted in collaboration with IUFRO on the IUFRO-INAFOR Joint International Conference, held in Yogyakarta on 24 – 27 August 2017.  The conference’s main objective is to gather and share information and knowledge related to forestry research and development among scientists in Indonesia and other countries. Since the benefit of the conference is significant, FOERDA has committed to organize the meeting every two years.


Starting from 2017, several Research and Development Centers and Technical Implementation Unit (Unit Pelaksana Teknis) under FOERDIA have been assigned as Centre’s of Excellence in Science and Technology (Pusat Unggulan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi/PUI) by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education covering some specific research topics. In order to also disseminate their progress, the 4th INAFOR EXPO this year will be set up in the form of 5 series of INAFOR conferences including exhibitions from universities, NGOs, companies and international organizations. The exhibition will present research and development achievements in Forestry and Environment, photo competition and Innovation Award.

This year, one of INAFOR’s sub-theme would support translating science resulted from research and development into policy making processes in particularly within the forestry and environment field in Indonesia. As Indonesian Government represented by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is really committed to shift its forest and environmental governance though a set of corrective measures, supports from research and development are very crucial and needed. Research and Development Centre for Socio-Economics Policy and Climate Change (REDSPOC) is designing an expo within the INAFOR event to address this issue.

International Conference on Managing Forest Genetic Resources in Changing Environment and Landscapes

Forest genetic resources in the tropic are undergoing dramatic changes due to increasing human population, industrial development, economic development and climate change. Despite its importance to support economic and industrial development, and to maintain environmental sustainability, excessive use of forest genetic resources will result in deteriorating environmental quality and threatening the economic development. Genetic resources can be driven towards loss of variability, or even to extinction. Global climate change that the world is currently experiencing is partly due to the loss of forest genetic resources from over exploitation, illegal logging and forest fire.

This International Conference adopted the theme "Managing Forest Genetic Resources in Changing Environment and Landscape" at a time when natural forest as well as plantations in tropical countries including Indonesia is experiencing major changes. The term Forest Genetic Resources is used to accommodate both the natural and plantation forests. Excessive utilization and deterioration of tropical rain forests has increased the threats to flora and fauna of indigenous species. Increasing number of species which fall into IUCN Appendix indicates that those species is diminishing. Conservation attempts must be implemented to significantly reduce the rate of deterioration of the species. At the same time environmental services of these resources has also diminished. Research plays important role to curb this loss.

Over the last decades, planted forests play vital roles in supporting forest-based industry. Fast growing species are dominant in the tropics. Due to these fast growing species, Indonesia has increased its share as one of the major producers of pulp and paper in the world market. However, these plantation forests are also facing increased pressure from biotic and abiotic threats which may harm their sustainability. Nowadays, pulp derived from these species has also been used as material for rayon. Such product diversification will eventually increase the need to ensure sustainability and productivity of pulpwood plantation.

In addition, plantation for non-wood forest products such as essential oil and biodiesel, are gaining bio-economic importance. These plantations are suited for small farmers with small land area. Further development of these plantations will enhance environmental and economic value for the rural inhabitants.

Biotechnology including tissue culture and genetic analysis, involving biotic and abiotic factors has been used to increase economic and ecosystem values of forest genetic resources. Mass propagation by tissue culture provides flash and mass seedlings to support in both commercial plantations and rare species conservation. Tissue culture could also be applied in part of sequential tree improvement strategies to select plus trees. DNA database has also become important to prevent illegal logging and trading of endemic and threatened flora and fauna in Indonesia, to control distribution of the selected plus/elite trees, to assess genes controlled phenotypic, and as an attempt to maintain forests and plantations health.

The Conference is held to publish the latest research and development works focusing on a range of aspects on forest genetic resources, and organized following 3 sub-themes.


1. Approaches towards changing biotic factors

Biotic components or biotic factors can be described as any living component that affects another organism, or shapes the ecosystem. In the context of forest genetic resources, the changing biotic factors are manifested in many forms including increasing pests and diseases threats, decreasing or increasing number of preys or grazing area in a national park or game reserve. Biotic factors changes can also affect biodiversity.

2. Approaches towards changing abiotic factors

Abiotic factors are non-living component (chemical and physical) of the environment that affects living organism and the functioning of ecosystems. Changing in nutrient balance in the soil, climate change, forest fire, drought etc. are some of the factors that affect the sustainability of the resources.

3. Approaches towards changing industrial needs

Processing technology and product are rapidly changing to meet consumer demand. With the increasing environmental awareness, consumers are concern with any process or product that may harm the environment. At the same time, technology has become more sophisticated to produce new product or improving the efficiency of the current technology.

International Conference on the Improvement of Environmental Quality

Environmental problems which are ranging from ecosystems degradations to low productivities faced by developing countries such as Indonesia. (Amri, Winarso, & Muchlizar, 2018). This is largely due to the population and economic growth of Indonesia (Rajagukguk, 2015). Environmental problems are complex and urgent, requiring comprehensive analysis and integrated synthesis (Anderberg, 2001;Campbell et al., 2015 and Hampton et al., 2017). P3KLL has declared in PUI (Centre of Excellence) to adhere the problems that related to acid deposition, mercury contamination and environment metrology in order to increase the environmental quality.

In addition, within the broader framework, it is also necessary to carry out environmental research and development as well as regular monitoring in order to improve the quality of air, water and land. Thus, the results of various research, development and monitoring are need to be disseminated  though international seminar organized by FOERDIA, which is planned to be implemented simultaneously by its research centers, in which P3KLL will organize special theme "Role of science and technology to support the improvement of environmental quality".

Role of science and technology to support the improvement of environmental quality, which includes several sub-themes, i.e., mercury; acid deposition, environmental metrology; air, water and soil quality; and development of environmental laboratory.
