Management of natural resources including forest resources must pay attention to the sustainability aspects and the impact of resource use. Natural resources are assets that are used to improve community welfare and development. Management of forests and forest products is required to continue to carry out forest functions from economic, ecological and social aspects. In this case, the role of science and technology becomes a necessity and continues to be supported by various innovations in order to efficiently manage resources.

Forest products as a renewable resource can contribute to providing solutions to one of the problems of the increasingly limited fossil energy through the development of bioenergy. As is known, along with the development of population and technology, energy needs are increasing and fossil energy is becoming increasingly limited. This encourages the development of bioenergy as one of the alternatives to meet energy needs. The importance of bioenergy development has been realized by countries in the world who have agreed to increase low-carbon bioeconomic, and contribute to the development of sustainable bioenergy to meet energy needs.

On the other hand, forest management leaves both waste in processing forest products, harvesting forest products, and in managing the environment in general. With the application of technology, the utilization of waste can be increased into a variety of products that have high added value, both wood products, bioenergy, industrial supporting materials and other strategic products. It is also capable of contributing to increased revenue, encouraging circular economy and increasing the efficiency of resource utilization directed at zero waste. Circular economy basically uses back waste into products that have the potential to be developed and provide economic and environmental benefits.

In this regard, the Forest Products Research and Development Centre organizes an international forum for parties to share information, experience, and contribute ideas in the field of bioenergy and waste utilization to support circular economy and sustainable environmental management.


1. Bioenergy Processing for Sustainable Environmental Management

Increased energy needs are faced by many countries in the world. Bioenergy development is an effort to save diminishing fossil energy, while energy needs continue to increase. This is also in line with awareness of the development of environmentally friendly energy. This theme includes increasing added value from the utilization of timber industry waste, developing bioenergy from biomass including waste, forest plants and other bioenergy sources; equipment engineering, model development, economic studies, and others.

2. Waste Utilization and Management to Support Circular Economy

Waste utilization is an effort to increase added value that can increase income and as an alternative source of income that can strengthen community participation and  employment opportunities. This is in line with the concept of circular economy through careful use of natural resources in an environmentally friendly process so as to obtain efficient use of resources. The application of science and technology and  innovation appropriately are expected to be able to increase product value added. This theme includes the utilization of timber and harvesting industrial waste, solid and liquid waste management, utilization of waste processing results for biomedicine and improvement in the quality of forest products, and other related fields.


International Conference on Forest Product 2019: Adopting the Renewable Bioenergy and Waste Utilization to Support Circular Economy and Sustainable Environment will receive papers that will be presented both oral and poster, including the following aspects:

  1. Technology and bioenergy development
  2. Increasing the value added of industrial waste and forest harvesting
  3. Increasing the value added of NTFPs and biomedicine
  4. Processing waste to diversify timber products
  5. Processing waste to improve the quality of forest products
  6. Biomass utilization
  7. Other aspects relevant to the theme
